Delaine Merino's and Debouillet's (a Delaine Merino/Rambouillet cross) produce what is considered to be the best wool in the world. They average a micron range of 18.5 to 23.5 microns. Our Merino's have the most exquisite fleeces! Merino and Merino blends are lovely to spin and also great for all kinds of needle and wet felting projects. www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/sheep
While Finn sheep are known for their prolifacy we chose bloodlines known for a smaller number of births and focused on lines known for exquisite fleeces. www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/sheep
The Gotland Peltsheep (pälsfår) or modern Gotland has been developed in Sweden since the 1920's through controlled breeding and intensive selection, producing a true multipurpose long wool sheep, yielding good flavored close-grained meat, furskins and soft silky lustrous fleece. It is typically 29 to 34 microns in diameter at 18 months of age, as measured midside at the last rib. Lambs wool is typically in the low to mid 20's micron range. www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/sheep
The Starshire Flock
Starshire Ranch maintains a flock of about 10 ewes. Lambing usually begins in March. In 2017, we will be lambing in February. Our Gotlands, with their beautiful locks, range from 88% to 95%. Our Finns and Merino produce beautiful fleeces for spinning as well. The Starshire flock produces exquisite wool for hand spinning, knitting and all your crafting projects. Our Finn's, Merino and Gotland sheep are coated so vegetable matter is minimized. Pictures of the "Starshire Crew" on the Starshire flock page. Alpaca shearing is now complete, contact me if you are interested in fleeces.
